There are several levels of organization in Little League, which mostly matter to you when it's Tournament time. The first, and most important of course, is your local league
After the league, the next level of organization is the District. Each state in divided into districts made up of somewhere between 4 and 16 leagues. We are California District 52, made up of 14 leagues in San Mateo County and Palo Alto.
Each district is run by a District Administrator, and a District board, and we coordinate activity between our leagues. Districts are run entirely by volunteers, like the leagues are.
Every June the first step on the journey to the Little League World Series is the District 52 tournaments.
The winners of the district tournaments move on to the section tournaments. There are 7 sections in Northern California and we are part of Section 3.
The other districts in Section 3 are D14 (Fremont/Newark area), D45 (Hayward/Union City area) and D57 (Livermore/Dublin area).
Most states do not have sections, but California does because we are so big. There is no Section board or anything, the section tournament is just organized by the 4 or 5 District Administrator who are part of that section.
After winning the section tournament, the next step is the state tournament. This is the final step for the 10s and 11s teams.
We are the state of Northern California. The state is run by the NorCal DA association which each district DA is part of. This group runs the state tournaments, and also provides a support group for all the DAs.
There are 31 Districts in NorCal. There are 39 Districts in SoCal, and for historical reasons we don't overlap district numbers with them. There are 53 states in LL. Texas also is split in half and there is one for DC.
Little League runs 5 region offices in the US. These offices are run by full time paid professionals and are a critical part of the support system for our district and leagues. Each office is headed by a Region Director.
We are part of the "West" region which is in San Bernardino.
The West Region Complex hosts the 12s/Majors Regional Tournament. In order to bring more than 5 US teams to Williamsport for the 12s/Majors Little League World Series, there are actually now 10 regional tournaments. The West region runs three of them: West, Northwest and Mountain. Each of these smaller regions is just 4 states. We compete with SoCal, Hawaii and Arizona.
In total for 12s there are 10 US teams and 10 International teams at the World Series.
For the older tournaments, the World Series features only the 5 main regions, plus a 6th "host" team which is a team from the district or city hosting the tournament and 6 international teams, for a total of 12 teams. The host of the older regionals changes every decade or so. Right now the 13s/Intermediate host is Nogales, Arizona, the 14s/Juniors host is Bend, Oregon and the 16s/Seniors host is Oakland.
The 12s/Majors World Series is always at Little League headquarters in Williamsport, PA, just as it has been since 1947.
Like the regionals, the location of the older tournaments changes every decade or so. Currently the 13s/Intermediate is in Livermore, California, the 14s/Juniors is in Taylor, Michigan and the 16s/Seniors are in Easley, South Carolina.
